Bu:ns patients me i11 need of extra attention in speciali􀖻ed intensive care units, specially as due to their sustained burns and resultant circulatory upset their life is in danger. A severe burn is classified as over 30"{, body surface in adults and over 100";, in children.
Two types of shock are encountered in burns:
1)Hypovolaemic shock during the first three days.
followed by;
2)Septic shock from the fourth day to the end of the third week.
The aim of the treatment is combating these two comp!ications.
In these patients fluid loss must be replaced, the electrolyte imbalance corrected, and the acid/base balance restored. The treatment and dressing of burned areas must be carried out in sterile conditions. and antibiotic therapy commenced simultaneously with the above.
