Anti-Plagiarism Policy

The scientific journal "Research in Medicine" (Pezhoohesh dar Pezeshki), as one of the scientific journals of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, follows the "National Guidelines for Ethics in Publishing Medical Research" approved by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education and in accordance with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines. The journal strongly rejects any form of plagiarism and research misconduct and takes strict actions against them -2-7.
Definition of Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the unacknowledged use of all or part of the content, ideas, findings, tables, images, or expressions of others, whether published or unpublished, without proper citation or obtaining permission from the copyright holder. This unethical act includes the following -2-6:
  • Direct copying of others' text without quotation marks and citation
  • Using others' ideas, opinions, or innovations without proper attribution
  • Using others' images, graphs, tables, or figures without permission
  • Translating others' texts and presenting them as new work without citing the original source
  • Inappropriate paraphrasing that leads to structural similarity with the original text
  • Self-plagiarism: Reusing significant portions of one's own previously published work without citation
Plagiarism Screening Process
All submitted manuscripts to "Research in Medicine" are screened for originality and similarity with existing sources before being sent to the peer review process:
  1. Initial Screening: All pre-publication manuscripts are reviewed by the editorial team for originality, information validity, and proper citation of sources 
  2. Software Screening: Manuscripts are checked using reliable plagiarism detection software
  3. Maximum Allowed Similarity: The acceptable similarity threshold in articles should not exceed 20%. If similarity exceeds the permitted limit, the manuscript is returned to the authors or rejected.
  4. Final Check: Even accepted manuscripts are screened once more with plagiarism detection software before publication.
Types of Research Misconduct
According to the National Guidelines for Ethics in Publishing, the following constitute research misconduct:

Fabrication Presenting results that are not based on actual research and are made up
Falsification Manipulating data, omitting or altering findings to achieve desired results
Plagiarism Using others' content without citation
Overlapping Publication Publishing data and findings from previous articles with minor changes as new work
Simultaneous Submission Submitting the same manuscript to two or more journals simultaneously
Guest/Gift Authorship Adding names of individuals who do not meet authorship criteria
Ghost Authorship Omitting names of individuals who meet authorship criteria
False Attribution Mentioning unreal academic affiliation
Author Obligations
By submitting a manuscript to "Research in Medicine," authors confirm that:
  1. The manuscript is their original and new research and has not been previously published elsewhere.
  2. All sources used in writing the manuscript are properly cited.
  3. They have not used others' ideas, results, or texts without citation.
  4. If using figures, tables, questionnaires, or significant portions of others' texts, they have obtained necessary written permission and cited the source.
  5. They have not simultaneously submitted the manuscript to other journals.
  6. They are fully familiar with and accept the terms of this policy.
Actions if Plagiarism is detected
If any form of plagiarism or research misconduct is identified, the journal follows COPE and Ministry of Health guidelines and takes the following actions:
In the Pre-acceptance Stage:
  • If plagiarism is identified in the early review stages, the manuscript is immediately rejected and not considered for publication.
  • The corresponding author is notified accordingly.
In the Post-publication Stage:
  • If an article is identified as plagiarized after publication, the editor conducts a preliminary investigation and, if necessary, forms an advisory committee for further review.
  • The article is retracted and removed from the journal website.
  • A retraction notice is published on the journal website.
  • The matter is officially reported to the University Research Ethics Committee, the Deputy of Research and Technology of the Ministry of Health, and the authors' affiliated institutions.
  • The names of violating authors are placed on the journal's blacklist, and they will not be allowed to submit future manuscripts.
  • If necessary, the case is reported to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Responsibilities of Reviewers and Editors
  • Reviewers are required to report any significant similarity or overlap between the manuscript under review and other published articles to the editor.
  • Editors are committed to maintaining confidentiality throughout the review process and taking decisive action against violations.
Alignment with International Guidelines
This policy fully aligns with the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and the National Guidelines for Ethics in Publishing Medical Research of the Ministry of Health
