Abstract
Background and Aim: Studies have shown that changes in the expression level of some genes play a role in the development of cancer. The aim of this study is to investigate the changes in the expression of apoptotic genes Bax and Bcl-2 in MCF-7 cell line after treatment with selenium nanoparticles containing chamomile extract.
Methods: This study is a practical and experimental intervention. One- way analysis (ANOVA) and t-test was used for statistical analysis. After synthesizing selenium nanoparticles with Anthemis atropatana extract, the correctness of the synthesis was confirmed by SEM, TEM and EDX. To perform MTT and calculate the IC50, the cells (cancer cell line) MCF-7 and (healthy cell line) MCF-10 were treated with selenium nanoparticles for 24 hours. Finally, the changes in Bax and Bcl-2 gene expression were examined.
Results: The results of checking the accuracy of the synthesis of selenium nanoparticles showed that the synthesized nanoparticles were spherical and had a diameter of 33.40 nm. The IC50 concentration was 6 µg/ ml. The results of
real- time PCR showed that after 24-hour treatment with the IC50 concentration of selenium nanoparticles, the expression of apoptotic gene Bax increased significantly by 2.69 ± 0.31-fold (P-value < 0.001) and the expression of anti- apoptotic gene Bcl-2 decreased significantly by 0.21 ± 0.17-fold (P-value < 0.001).
Conclusion: Selenium nanoparticles containing chamomile extract modulated gene expression in a manner that promotes apoptosis, suggesting their potential as therapeutic agents.

Background and Aim: Developing culture and cryopreservation methods for spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) is essential for genetic studies, regenerative medicine, transgenic animal production and recombinant drug development. Establishing an optimal culture system for these cells is crucial. This study aimed to investigate the in vitro effects of different concentrations of L-arginine on the proliferation of frozen-thawed caprine SSCs.
Methods: This experimental study was repeated five times. Isolated spermatogonial cells were frozen- thawed and cultured in six groups with a basal culture medium (DMEM containing 1% antibiotics and 5% FBS) supplemented with different concentrations of L-arginine (0, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 μmol/L). All experimental groups were cultured for 10 days. The number and surface area of colonies formed were assessed on days 4, 7, and 10. Expression of spermatogonial genes (ID4, BCL6, PGP9.5, VASA, PLZF and OCT4) was determined by RT-PCR.
Results: The viability rates of fresh cells before and after the addition of a cryoprotectant agent were 87.14 ± 2.6% and 80.72 ± 1.21%, respectively, which decreased to 65.38 ± 1.26% after thawing. The number and surface area of spermatogonial colonies in the fourth treatment group (200 μmol/L L-arginine) were significantly higher compared to other experimental groups (P < 0.05). Finally, the isolated cells expressed SSC surface markers.
Conclusion: The addition of 200 μmol/L L-arginine likely enhances the colonization of frozen-thawed goat SSCs in short- term culture.

Background and Aim: Heart failure is a complex syndrome that leads to a decrease in quality of life. Self- care is a fundamental component of heart failure management. One method of teaching self-care is the use of energy conservation methods. This study aimed to investigate the effect of implementing energy conservation methods on the quality of life and depression in patients with heart failure.
Methods: This was a clinical trial study conducted on 100 participants in intervention and control groups, without blinding, and with a block randomized allocation of size 4 in 1403 at Shahid Rajaei Cardiovascular, medical, Research, and Educational Institute, Tehran. Each group consisted of 50 participants. Before the intervention, the demographic tool, the Minnesota tool and the Beck Depression tool were completed by both groups. Energy conservation methods were taught to the intervention group. After 6 weeks, the Minnesota and Beck Depression tools were re- administered to both groups by telephone. For data analysis, SPSS version 24 was used, and the chi-square, Fisher's exact, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U, and Wilks' lambda tests were employed.
Results: After accounting for attrition, 47 individuals in the intervention group and 48 in the control group were analyzed. Based on the questionnaire results, before the intervention, there were no significant differences between the two groups in demographic information and questionnaire scores (P > 0.05), indicating homogeneity between the groups. However, after the intervention, the mean and standard deviation of the quality of life score (49.25 ± 15.08) decreased significantly in the intervention group (P < 0.001), indicating an improvement in quality of life. Additionally, the mean and standard deviation of depression (22.61 ± 5.08) decreased significantly in the intervention group (P < 0.001), suggesting a reduction in depression. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the mean scores of these two questionnaires in the control group (P > 0.001).
Conclusion: Energy conservation method is a non-pharmacological method that can increase quality of life and reduce depression in patients with heart failure and can be utilized by patients.

Background and Aim: Angular cheilitis is a common condition among dental patients. However, it often responds poorly to antifungal treatment, and the use of corticosteroids can lead to lesion recurrence or medication resistance. This study aimed to assess the frequency of Staphylococcus aureus in patients who visited the Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine Department at Yazd Dental Faculty in 2017.
Methods: This case- control study included 163 participants, with 65 patients diagnosed with angular cheilitis in the case group and 98 healthy individuals in the control group. Swabs were collected and inoculated on blood agar and Sabouraud dextrose agar. The cultures were then examined for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, employing Chi- square and t-tests, with a significance level set at p < 0.05.
Results: The study included 98 healthy individuals and 65 patients with angular cheilitis. The results indicated that Staphylococcus aureus was not detected in either the patient or control group (p < 0.9). A higher prevalence of angular cheilitis was observed among female patients. Additionally, there was a direct correlation between the presence of angular cheilitis and Candida albicans.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that Staphylococcus aureus is not a contributing factor in angular cheilitis lesions. Therefore, antibiotic treatment for refractory cases should be postponed until microbial cultures confirm bacterial involvement.

Background and Aim: Neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are among the most important diseases that, in addition to cognitive and motor effects, are often associated with chronic pain. Tramadol is used as an analgesic drug in the management of pain in these patients, but its effects on the central nervous system and cognitive and motor functions are still debated.
Methods:The type of study is review article. Data collection is taken from reliable scientific databases such as Pubmed. This article examines the mechanisms of Tramadol's effect and its effects on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients. Considering the analgesic effects of tramadol through the inhibition of serotonin and norepinephrine reabsorption as well as the activity on opioid receptors, its side effects such as cognitive disorders, drowsiness and movement problems in these patients should be carefully considered.
Conclusion:Studies show that tramadol can aggravate cognitive function in Alzheimer's patients and increase movement problems in Parkinson's patients. It seems that tramadol can be useful as a treatment option to reduce pain in patients with neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, but the issues related to drug side effects should also be considered.
