Abstract
Aim and Background: Actually Acinetobacter baumanii is the most common cause of nosocomial infection. Recent studies detected some classes of integrons in A. baumannii multi-Drug resistance (MDR) isolates. Integron classes introduced the most important pathway for the dissemination resistance genes and the emergence of MDRs species in Acinetobacter. The aims of the study is to determine the prevalence of integron genes in A. baumannii strains isolated from patients hospitalized in Sari hospitals in north of Iran.
Material and Methods: Total of 260 samples were collected from Sari hospitals during 2015-2016 years. These strains detected by biochemical methods and antibiotic test resistance based on disc agar diffusion (DAD) method according to CLSI guidelines. All of the A. baumannii positive samples were evaluated for the presence of class 1, 2 & 3 integron genes by PCR method.
Results: One hundred four A. baumannii were isolated. Among the integron-positive samples, 66 class I and 56 class II integron cassettes were detected. We did not detect any class III integrons. According to DAD method, high resistance to most antibiotics such as cefatoxime, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin and sulbactam were indicated. Moreover, the highest sensitivity were represented for colistin among isolates.
Conclusion: The results of this study, have been showed a high prevalence of integron and similar to other studies and its significant association with the resistance to most antibiotic classes. Thus, isolates with integrin show a higher percentage of resistance to antibiotics than non-integrin isolates.
