SUMMARY
An infrequent case of adenoid cystic carcinoma is described. Four years ago a 35 year old women was admitted to BuAli Hospital because of a firm painful mass near her left areola. The pathologic diagnosis after surgery was adenoid cystic carcinoma of breast.
Up to now the patient is quite well without recurrence.
incidence. Adenoid cystic carcinoma is an infrequent type of breast carcinoma comprising from 0.1 % to 0.2% of infiltrating carcinomas.
Mac. These tumors are usually small, firm masses in the areolar region. Mic. The characteristic diphasic histologic growth pattern is similar to that of adenoid cystic carcinoma of salivary gland origon. lmmunohistochemical studies showed act in and I or 5100 protein were variably positive in all cases. Keratin, EMA and CEA immunostaining disclosed ductal type cells in all cases. Vimentin was positive in myoepilhelial cells.
Clinical course. Approximately 100 of these cases have been reported, none have had axillary metastasis, and the survival rate is very high.
Treatment. Treatment is either lumpectomy or simple mastectomy.
