Nine cases of carotid body tumor chemiodectomas in seven Patients are presented and diagnostic and therapeutic problems discussed Similar to other reports, many cases undergo operative exploration without correct preoper.ativ.e diagnosis or ability of the surgeon to handle such lesions. The most important factor for correct diagndsis is including carotid body in differential diagnosis of lateral masses in the neck The definitive diagnosis is then confirmed with angiography which is 100% reliable. Awareness of the pathology and correct diagnosis and early excision by surgeons qualified and prepared for vascular procedure on carotid artery will help for safe outcome of the patients and prevention of common unnecessary complications. We believe, that despite the large size of some tumors, complete resection with preservation of internal carotid artery is practical and should be carried out. Two cases of bilateral carotid body tumor in family is reported.
