Background and aim : Due to the importance of altruism and its known complications and lack of information about its status in Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences students, this study was conducted in 1977.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was performed on 224 subjects including 80 first-year subjects, 74 post-test basic science subjects, and 70 final year subjects. They were selected by multistage random sampling. The personality traits of altruism in the 18 indices in a five-choice range were never, sometimes, usually, most frequently and always measured, and the role of school year, age, gender, etc. As related factors in the three altruism categories, Risky altruism and simple altruism were statistically analyzed by chi-square test.
Results: This study was performed on 224 medical students in different educational levels. Students never stated altruism in 30.3% and sometimes 15.3%, and altruism was simple in 43%. Risky dating decreased with age and was lower in women than in men. P <0.001
Conclusion: It seems that with increasing educational level, personality type of altruism will increase, risky altruistic behavior will decrease and this will be problematic for the patient. This research recommends exploring the causes and actions needed to promote the phenomenon of altruism, especially risky altruism.
