SUMMARY
Giardia is a protozoan parasite which exists in the small intestine in man. This parasite could act as a barrier against fat absorption. It also results in anemia as a result of interference with folic acid vitamin B6 and probably iron absorption.
In this study a total of 198 infested and 35 noninfested school children were studied for serum Iron and TIBC. The results showed the Iron level to be lower than normal. In 3 patients the TIBC level was higher than normal. In 13 cases the percentage of Iron storage was under fifteen percent of the normal level. The morphology of red blood cell in all blood samples were noromochrom and noromocytic. The levels of Iron and TIBC in the control group were normal.
