Abstract:   (20 Views)
Background and Aim: Malignant otitis externa is a severe and potentially life-threatening infection that affects the external ear canal and the temporal bone. Prompt diagnosis of this condition is critical, as delays can lead to serious complications or even fatal outcomes. The management strategies for this disease vary and can often be contradictory and challenging to implement. Therefore, this study aims to review the clinical and radiological characteristics associated with malignant otitis externa.
Methods: In this review study, the keywords "clinical," "radiological," "malignant," and "otitis externa" were systematically searched in the PUBMED, EMBASE, and ELSEVIER databases covering the period from 2015 to 2025. The objective of this review is to evaluate the clinical and radiological characteristics of malignant otitis externa. The analysis encompasses clinical trial studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, and cohort studies. The exclusion criteria for this review included reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, case reports, and studies focusing on the treatment of malignant otitis externa.
Conclusion: Malignant otitis externa and its complications are more common in diabetics and the elderly. Pain and ear discharge are the most common symptoms, and if these symptoms occur, especially in high-risk patients, evaluation for malignant otitis externa is necessary. CT scan and MRI are useful diagnostic methods for this disease.
