Background : Electrodiagnostic studies comprise a standard and reliable diagnostic modality for the carpal tunnel syndrome. During the present study, we evaluated the changes of electroneurographic parameters following the operation for carpal tunnel syndrome.
Materials and methods : Electrodiagnostic data of 16 patients suffering from idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome were gathered prior to the operation and again 2 weeks after surgery. Paired t-test was used for data analysis.
Results : Electroneurographic improvement was noted among all patients regardless of their disease severity, (p<0.05). Most remarkable improvement was noted in the sensory nerve action potential amplitude recorded from the third digit, (p< 0.001).
Conclusion : All electrodiagnostic parameters improved during the first two weeks following the operation. This diagnostic modality is a useful tool to evaluate the success of surgical intervention for the carpal tunnel syndrome.
